A Spiritual Look At US Election
2000
By Nick Kovacs
During the 2000 US presidential election, there
are two important dates that have religious significance during the Florida
re-count. November 26, 2000
(the Feast of Christ the King), and December 12, 2000 (the Feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe).
- On
the Feast of Christ the King, Florida Secretary
of State Katherine Harris, officially certified the re-count in
Florida. The tally showed George W. Bush
ahead of Al Gore by 537 votes: 2,912,790 to 2,912,253. Certifying
the votes on this feast day reminds us that Jesus Christ rules the world,
and that any human being who has political power, receives their power from
Jesus.
- On the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the decision from the US
Supreme Court ended the Florida re-count problem. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the
patron of the Americas, and is a major Pro-Life devotion.
Ending the 2000 re-count on this feast
day, reminds Americans to return to their Pro-Life roots.
I believe these two dates embody the basic founding
principles of America, which is articulated in greater detail in the Declaration
of Independence and the Constitution. Let us pray that
America returns to its founding principles; that we are one nation under God,
and that human life is protected from conception to natural
death.
