HAPPY NEW YEAR TO FLORIDIANS!

In 2005, Florida endured another record-setting hurricane season.  Many
Floridians not only worked to return their own life and homes to normal, but
also assisted individuals in our neighboring states affected by Hurricane
Katrina.  Our team of emergency responders remained the best in the nation
and we continued to improve our state's emergency response system.  We also
encouraged all Floridians to work together to create a stronger "culture of
preparedness" as we ready ourselves for future hurricanes.

In 2005, Florida's students made significant gains in the classroom and on
the FCAT.  Florida's job growth remained strong throughout the year and our
unemployment rate was at its lowest level in nearly three decades.  Our
legislature convened for a special session and passed historic legislation
to transform Medicaid in Florida.  I thank the legislature for their hard
work and commitment, and look forward to another year of fulfilling
ambitious goals to better our state.

As 2005 ends and we look toward 2006, it is my sincere hope that the new
year will bring peace to our world and our men and women serving overseas
will be reunited with their loved ones.  I encourage all Floridians to keep
our troops in their thoughts and prayers as they continue to defend our
nation and our freedom.  Columba and I wish all Floridians a happy, healthy
and peaceful new year.
