TALLAHASSEE-Governor Jeb Bush today urged Floridians to
assist the relief efforts for victims of the Indian Ocean
Earthquake and the resulting Tsunamis. Upon landing today in
Southeast Asia, Governor Bush underscored that our prayers are
with the families of the victims during this tragedy. To honor
the tsunami victims, the Governor also ordered Florida’s flags
to fly at half-staff this week.“Floridians know all too well
the immediate and long-term effects of natural disasters,” said
Governor Bush. “During this past hurricane season, the
outpouring of financial and emotional support was instrumental
in building our resources and resolve toward recovery. I am
confident Floridians will come together to assist in the
response and recovery of this devastating disaster.”
Floridians are encouraged to donate to the following relief
organizations actively engaged in the recovery efforts:
Americares, American Red Cross, CARE Asian Fund, Catholic Relief
Services, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent
Societies, Salvation Army International Headquarters, Save the
Children and UNICEF.
President George W. Bush appointed Governor Bush to lead a
delegation of experts alongside U.S. Secretary of State Colin
Powell. The group will meet with fellow leaders and
international organizations to assess the damages and relief
efforts. Secretary Powell and Governor Bush will report their
findings directly to President Bush to ensure the U.S.
government provides the most effective assistance possible.
