FIGHT CONTINUES TO PROTECT TERRI SCHIAVO AND OTHER VULNERABLE FLORIDIANS

We know Terri Schiavo has been severely impaired since 1990, but she made no
clear directive about receiving food and water.  A court's order of death by
starvation flies in the face of government's duty to protect the weak,
disabled and vulnerable.  I appreciate the efforts of state and federal
lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who have taken this duty to heart.
This week, the Florida House of Representatives passed thoughtful
legislation that respects patients' decisions about end of life care, while
protecting those who have not made a decision.  Meanwhile, the U.S. Congress
courageously attempted to grant Terri Schiavo a reprieve.  I will continue
to work with the Florida Senate to try to protect Terri and all Floridians
from euthanasia by omission.  Columba and I will keep Terri and her family
in our prayers this weekend.
