My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Once more, after an extended time of preparation during Lent, we go to our parish churches finding altars brighter with flowers, music spirited and lively, homilies upbeat and moving, and the spirit of the congregation celebratory and inspiring. This sacred environment enhances our celebration of this most important Sunday of the year, the day of the Resurrection of the Lord. Nature itself conspires, with budding leaves on the trees, the sound of small birds coming from their nests and the increase in daylight, to convey that this is the season of rebirth and renewal. Christ’s resurrection brings about a new birth, a new beginning and promise for all humanity. Our ancient enemies, death and decay, are put to flight by Christ who once was dead, but now lives.

All of us, whatever our present trials or burdens, ought to pause on Easter Sunday to reflect on how Christ, because of his suffering and death, has turned everything around with the promise that our trials and sorrows will not last, but that the hope and promise of eternal joy and happiness will, and for all eternity.

In an ancient reflection on the death and resurrection of Christ, the author points that the Christ, who once came into the world wrapped in swaddling clothing, now comes again on Easter Sunday. As we behold the wounds which still mark the hands, feet and side of our Risen Savior, we will discover that every trial, duty or pain that we must endure on this earth must be seen as gifts, often wrapped in coverings that are ugly, harsh or hard. If we have the courage to go beyond the wrappings, we will see the angel’s hand and the splendor which lies within. Let us discover once more the gift which is Christ, who gives meaning to our trials and labors as no one else can, and in doing so, let us rejoice that he has won the victory for us.

May your family experience the fullness of joy and peace during this Easter season.

Sincerely yours in the Risen Lord,

Most Rev. John H. Ricard, SSJ
Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee
